DSS Averts Mob Attack On Chinese Diplomat

A Chinese diplomat was rescued from a mob attack by officials of the Nigerian Department of State Security (DSS) at Wuse market in Abuja.

The incident which occurred at the gate of the market, transpired between the security at the gate, onlookers, and the Chinese diplomat. Upon arriving at the gate he was asked to open the trunk of his Honda Accord for inspection, as is the practice due to insecurity in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, the diplomat who described himself as head of the Chinese business unit in the embassy, became non-compliant, which drew the attention of onlookers. His continued boasting and threats that he will call Nigeria's security chiefs to intervene, angered the onlookers who proceeded to drag the diplomat and his occupant out of the vehicle.

After bragging about his connections and a subsequent phone, men from the DSS swiftly arrived at the scene. The DSS made the market management replace the diplomat's shirt which was torn during the melee, N100,000 which he claimed was stolen from the car was also replaced.

Some onlookers were very unhappy as they felt the diplomat, while using Nigeria Security Services, showed little regard for Nigerian laws. It is worthy to note that the diplomat enjoys diplomatic immunity and not susceptible to such searches.
