Otto Warmbier Dies After Being Released From North Korea

The American college student Otto Warmbier, who was held prisoner in North Korea for over a year has died days after being released from North Korea detention in a state of coma.

Warmbier, 22, died from brain damage complications according to officials at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was receiving treatment since his release. In a statement issued to ABC News by his family they stated, “it is our sad duty to report that our son, Otto Warmbier, has completed his journey home. Surrounded by his family, Otto died today at 2:20 pm.”

Warmbier was arrested in Pyongyang in January of 2016, after surveillance caught him taking a propaganda poster. For his actions, Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for punishment for his “hostile act”.

The administration of former President Barack Obama have come under intense criticism by both the Warmbiers and current US President Trump for their handling of the situation.
